These photos of White Island I took in the late 80s. Back then it was a remote no mans land, visited only by the small number of Charter boats from Whakatane and a number of Tauranga commercial fishing boats, Occasionally you saw the odd larger pleasure vessel but never or hardly ever a small power boat. Back then I used to roam freely over the Island and got to know it fairly intimately. We even got erupted on.

Rumour had it that you could have purchased it from the Private owners for about $20,000.

Things are very different today and due to the efforts of Peter and Jenny Taite (ex local deerfarmers). White Island has now become an International Tourist attraction and has probably become a priceless asset to its owners.

The Taits business White Island Tours now has exclusive Marine landing access to the island.

Other options for landing on or viewing the Island are by Helecopter or fixed wing aircraft
